The best Shopify combined listings app depends on your plan and budget. On Shopify Plus, start with Shopify's own Combined Listings app. On any other plan, the most reviewed options are SA Variants (437 reviews) and Grouptify (433 reviews), both Built for Shopify. OPTIS Combined Listings is the best free option, with auto-grouping by tag, collection, vendor, type, title, or metafield, but it is brand new with 5 reviews. Rubik has a useful free tier for AI grouping, and OPTIS Color Swatch Variants fits stores that want swatch styling and variant images in the same app.

What combined listings are, and why merchants split products by color

A combined listing takes several separate Shopify products, usually one per color or style, and shows them to shoppers as one listing with clickable swatches. Each product keeps its own record in your admin, with its own URL, title, images, and inventory.

Merchants split products this way for three reasons. Search: a product called "Linen Shirt - Sage" with its own URL and description has a better shot at color-specific searches than a variant row inside one product. Operations: separate products are easier to tag, collect, price, and report on. Catalog size: Shopify now allows 2,048 variants per product, but splitting by color still keeps each product simple. Our Shopify 100 variant limit guide covers that change.

The trade-off is discovery. A shopper who lands on the sage shirt has no idea it also comes in navy. A combined listings app links the products back together on the storefront. For when to use combined listings versus variants, read our Shopify combined listings guide.

Can you use combined listings without Shopify Plus?

Not with Shopify's own app. The Shopify Help Center states that the Shopify Combined Listings app is available only on Plus and enterprise commerce plans. Merchants on Basic, Grow, or Advanced who want to combine products need a third-party app.

Even on Plus, the native app has documented limits:

  • Up to 60 child products, 3 custom options, and 2,000 variant option values per combined listing
  • A product can belong to only one combined listing at a time
  • Combined listings show on the online store only, not other sales channels
  • They cannot be featured products, bundles, or subscription items
  • Child products do not filter in the Search & Discovery app
  • Free Shopify themes need version 15.0.0 or later; other themes may need code changes

How we evaluated

This comparison is based on each app's Shopify App Store listing and on Shopify's Help Center documentation, all reviewed on September 14, 2026. We did not install or test the competitor apps for this article, so treat features as what each vendor publishes, not as benchmark results. Ratings and prices change often, so check the live listing before you install.

Disclosure: OPTIS builds two apps on this list. We list a weakness for each of them, the same as for every other app.

Criteria we compared

  • Shopify plan requirement
  • Free plan availability and its real limits
  • Starting paid price and how pricing scales
  • Grouping methods: manual, automatic rules, CSV, AI
  • Whether each product keeps its own URL
  • Collection page and page builder support
  • Built for Shopify badge, per listing
  • Rating, review count, and launch date as a track record signal

The shortlist, app by app

Each entry covers pricing, what the listing highlights, one honest weakness, and who it suits. Data is from the linked listing as of September 14, 2026.

1. OPTIS Combined Listings: best free option

Listing: apps.shopify.com/optis-combined-listings · Rating: 5.0 from 5 reviews · Launched: July 29, 2026 · Built for Shopify: No · Admin languages: 23

Pricing: Free. A paid plan with extra premium capabilities is planned; features available today stay available when it arrives.

What stands out: The widest set of automatic grouping rules on this list: tag, collection, vendor, product type, title, or metafield. Groups sync in real time, so a new color with the right tag joins its group without manual work. You can also split a multi-variant product into individual products and bulk import or export groups by CSV. Each product keeps its own URL, and the app works on collection pages, with page builder apps, and alongside native Shopify Combined Listings.

Honest weakness: It is brand new, with 5 reviews and no Built for Shopify badge, so it has far less track record than SA Variants or Grouptify. On the free plan, swatches show a small "Powered by OPTIS Combined Listings" badge, which the team removes on request. Disclosure: this is our app.

Who it is for: Stores that want combined listings at zero cost, especially catalogs with consistent tags, vendors, or metafields that can drive automatic groups.

Auto Groups in OPTIS Combined Listings: pick a rule, preview the matching products, then publish.

2. Shopify Combined Listings: best if you are on Shopify Plus

Source: Shopify Help Center · Availability: Plus and enterprise commerce plans only

What stands out: It is Shopify's own implementation. A combined listing is a product type that connects separate products into one listing, and a banner in the admin tells you if your theme needs an upgrade or code change.

Honest weakness: Most merchants cannot use it because of the plan requirement. Plus stores still face the limits listed above, and Shopify advises previewing each listing to test compatibility with other apps.

Who it is for: Plus and enterprise merchants who want grouping inside Shopify's own product model and can live with those limits.

3. SA Variants: Combined Listings (StarApps): most reviewed

Listing: apps.shopify.com/variant-king-combined-listings · Rating: 5.0 from 437 reviews · Launched: January 31, 2025 · Built for Shopify: Yes

Pricing: Free for partner stores only. Standard from $5/month (up to 5,000 product groups, split variants, bulk CSV, AI grouping, swatch generation, market translation). Pro from $10/month (25,000 groups, swatch PowerUps, group categories, AI automations, tag-based groups). Prices scale with your Shopify plan; 30-day free trial.

What stands out: The deepest review history among dedicated combined listings apps, plus price comparisons, ratings, and low-stock alerts on swatches. Split variants get their own URL, title, description, image, and SEO. It lists compatibility with page builders and product filter apps.

Honest weakness: No free plan for live stores, tag-based groups sit on Pro rather than Standard, and listed prices rise with your Shopify plan.

Who it is for: Merchants who want a proven Built for Shopify app and are fine paying a few dollars a month.

4. G: Combined Listings & Variant (Grouptify): low-cost unlimited plan

Listing: apps.shopify.com/grouptify-combined-listings · Rating: 5.0 from 433 reviews · Launched: October 11, 2024 · Built for Shopify: Yes

Pricing: Starter is free for 3 product groups with manual grouping and 6 variant selector styles. Unlimited costs $5/month to $99.90/month depending on your Shopify plan and unlocks every feature, including Shopify Combined Listings support.

What stands out: Automatic grouping by title pattern, tag, metafield, and more, color and image swatches or dropdowns, CSV import and export, and multi-language and multi-currency support. Split products keep separate URLs and titles.

Honest weakness: Three free groups is a trial, not a working plan. The Unlimited price climbs on higher Shopify plans, and the listing names only Shopify Admin under "Works with", so confirm page builder compatibility first.

Who it is for: Stores on lower Shopify plans that want an established Built for Shopify app with everything unlocked for one price.

5. Rubik Combined Listings Swatch (Craftshift): free tier with AI grouping

Listing: apps.shopify.com/rubik-combined-listings · Rating: 5.0 from 91 reviews · Launched: February 3, 2026 · Built for Shopify: Yes

Pricing: Free (5 groups, 100 AI credits/month). Starter $10/month (100 groups). Advanced $30/month (500 groups). Premium $50/month (5,000 groups). AI credits rise with each tier; auto-sync and bulk grouping are on every plan.

What stands out: AI credits even on the free plan, customizable swatch styling, stock display options, and real-time sync. It lists compatibility with Combined Listings, page builders, and Translate & Adapt.

Honest weakness: Pricing follows group count, so large catalogs get expensive: 500 groups costs $30/month. Five free groups is a test drive.

Who it is for: Stores with a moderate number of groups that want AI help building them.

6. OPTIS Color Swatch Variants: best for swatch styling

Listing: apps.shopify.com/optis-color-swatch-variants · Rating: 5.0 from 802 reviews · Launched: June 10, 2025 · Built for Shopify: Yes

Pricing: Free on trial, partner/development, Pause & Build, and staff stores only. Pay As You Grow costs $11.90/month to $99.90/month by Shopify plan, with unlimited swatches, combined listings, variant images, and 24/7 support. 30-day free trial.

What stands out: A swatch and variant image app first, with combined listings in every paid plan. You get swatches with hover tooltips and sold-out styling, variant images that switch as shoppers select, and separate variant display on collection and product pages. It has the most reviews on this list.

Honest weakness: The highest starting price here and no free plan for live stores. If you only need grouping, OPTIS Combined Listings or Grouptify costs less. Disclosure: this is our app.

Who it is for: Apparel, home, and beauty stores where swatch design and variant images matter as much as grouping. Our color swatches guide shows the setup.

7. Easy Combined Listings: simplest single plan

Listing: apps.shopify.com/easy-combined-listings · Rating: no reviews yet · Launched: March 17, 2026 · Built for Shopify: No

Pricing: One Standard plan at $4.99/month with a 7-day free trial.

What stands out: A focused feature set: link separate products as color variants, automatic image swatches, and a unique URL, title, and description per color. The listing says it works with Online Store 2.0 themes without coding.

Honest weakness: Zero reviews, an English-only admin, no free plan, and no automatic grouping rules or CSV tools mentioned on the listing.

Who it is for: Small catalogs that need a few manual color groups at one flat price.

Common questions

Can I use Shopify combined listings without Shopify Plus?

Not with Shopify's own app, which the Shopify Help Center lists as available only on Plus and enterprise commerce plans. On Basic, Grow, or Advanced, use a third-party app such as OPTIS Combined Listings, SA Variants, Grouptify, or Rubik.

Is there a free Shopify combined listings app?

Yes. OPTIS Combined Listings is free with all current features; its free plan shows a small Powered by badge. Rubik is free for 5 product groups and Grouptify for 3. SA Variants is free only on partner stores, and OPTIS Color Swatch Variants only on trial, partner/development, Pause & Build, and staff stores.

How do I group products by color on Shopify?

Keep each color as its own product, then link them with a combined listings app. You can pick products manually, and several apps group them automatically by a shared tag, title pattern, or metafield. Shoppers then see swatches that switch between the linked products. Our Shopify combined listings guide walks through setup.

Do combined listings hurt SEO?

The apps in this list keep each product on its own URL, so each color can still be indexed. The risk is thin duplicate pages: if every color page has identical text, give each one a distinct title, description, and images.

Can I use a combined listings app together with a swatch app?

Usually, but two apps rendering swatches on one page can conflict. If you want grouping and styled swatches, one app that does both, such as OPTIS Color Swatch Variants or SA Variants, is simpler. Otherwise test both on a duplicate theme first.

Which combined listings apps are Built for Shopify?

As of September 14, 2026, SA Variants, Grouptify, Rubik, and OPTIS Color Swatch Variants show the Built for Shopify badge on their listings. OPTIS Combined Listings and Easy Combined Listings do not.

Next steps

Shortlist two apps based on your Shopify plan and group count, install both on a duplicate theme, and build the same few groups in each before rolling out to your full catalog.

To start free, OPTIS Combined Listings covers manual groups, Auto Groups, CSV import and export, and split products at no cost. If swatch design and variant images matter just as much, look at OPTIS Color Swatch Variants.
